A landscape design begins with the most essential element, the home or office at the center of a property. This part, called the hardscape, which should be the first element considered when planning a landscape design. What is the overall design of the structure? Is it straight and angular? Is it curved? Does it incorporate walls beside the home or office itself? These need to be considered because this is the canvas that will serve to support the landscape.

One of the most critical factors in determining what is desired in landscaping is to decide what it will look like at different times of the year. Seasons change, and the parts of the country where people live are different. It might go without saying that planning should be done accordingly. For someone who lives in a part of the country where the landscaping incorporates snow and ice for several months each year, the annual landscaping plan will differ from a person who needs to plan for growth all year. Further, if a landscape is designed for the desert, it will look different from that for an ocean setting.

If a home or a commercial building has unique interest points within the landscape, plan to include a walkway to explore them. And why not add flowers to that walkway? Every bit of color you add will add interest and excitement to your design.

What about design elements besides flowers and trees? What about rocks? You can make as much a statement with a rock or boulder as made with a yard and flowers. Add a boulder or two to break up the monotony of the final picture of what a yard looks like.

Beginning your overall design with a large rock is a superb way to get the landscape juices flowing. Once there’s a rock or two in a yard, everything can be planned around it. Rocks are never perfectly square (except the prefab kind), so take a design cue from that rock and plan a colorful flower bed around it, and don’t forget to layer that flower bed—all flower beds--to give depth to the color and the yard built around it.

Pathways of color are a splendid way to expand the design of a yard, so don’t worry about confining your splashes of color to one part of a yard. Why not incorporate several elements of a lawn with colorful beds of plants and flowers? Mix the two to add even more interest to the landscape.

Yards do not always need to feature plants. Take a cue from the Orient and include a statue, a piece of pottery (with flowers), or some other nonliving element to a yard to mix things up. A water fountain is another superb idea for adding some interest to a yard. A fountain that stands alone in the middle of a yard or on a patio can be an excellent design element to add, and for relaxation, there’s nothing like the sound of running water in the evening to give an end to a perfect day. Fountains can be purchased in their entirety from home and garden centers, or you can create them rock by rock with individual stones. Just add a recycling pump, and your fountain is fully functioning.

Speaking of relaxation, why not give yourself or your friends a place to sit while enjoying your landscaping? With a fountain there are plenty of opportunities to sit down and sit a spell, so why not provide someone with a nice chair, a bench, or even a swing to enjoy the sights and sounds of the fountain and even the sunset?

Another consideration for a beautiful landscape is fences. A fence need not be to keep something or someone out. A fence can provide a beautiful design element to a landscape, even if it’s a metal Cyclone fence. A drab metal boundary fence can be covered with a vine or creeping rose bushes to give a backdrop to the landscape design. Further, if you have unsightly homes around your property that you would rather not see, cover that fence with flowers to a height that blocks your view of those structures. This way, you can make the natural landscape on the horizon your backdrop. It will be like those homes and buildings don’t even exist.

Another excellent function for fences is for pure aesthetics. Whoever said that a fence must be installed only to keep people out or pets in? A small wooden picket style fence can be included virtually anywhere in landscape design to add a rustic touch to a lawn or garden. Why not erect a low wooden fence behind a berm covered with flowers, shrubs, and even a bark layer for a dramatic splash to your design?
